Description
I chose to illustrate Chapter 19, A Child at Brookside from the book, The Scarlet Letter. In this setting, Pearl is playing near a brook when she discovers the scarlet letter floating in the water. She is very upset with this discovery because she has left her mother Hester in the forest with her lover Dimmesdale. I wanted to instill the sadness Pearl had felt when she discovers the letter knowing how important the symbol was to her and her mother and now it was removed and she did not understand why. Passage: The child turned her eyes to the point indicated; and there lay the scarlet letter, so close upon the margin of the stream, that the gold embroidery was reflected in it. 'Bring it hither!' said Hester. 'Come thou and take it up!' answered Pearl. - The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
